I bought "Blue" when it came out (quite a while ago now!), and of course k.d. would do it justice

"But more than talent, to me she (k.d. Lang) was medicine ... invigorating therapy after an illness of mine. After working with k.d. for a while, I didn't need to take my pills". "Well, k.d., I love you for digging me out of the woodwork and getting me involved in music again just for the music. It's what my whole life has been about. You've made me realize again".

From someones blog.
http://nickcraine.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html WHEN I WAS A KID my mother would play these Joni Mitchell records over and over. She would dance around in her mo mo and get super sentimental and it would drive me insane to hear, Blue over and over again. Fast forward 30 years and here I am wearing out, Hymns Of The 49th Parallel by KD Lang. It's probably old news to everyone else in the world but I've only just discovered this fantastic recording. I love KD Lang and I'm pretty sure I'll drive my son up the same wall with it. See her perform Leonard Coen's, Hallelujah by clicking HERE.

Thanks Deb,
I know what she means about driving her son up the wall. I've taken to listening to kd on the stereo instead of my mp3 player. Our stereo is a five in one. When i finish, i forget to put it on tape. The other day i woke to my daughter & her boyfriend telling me in no uncertain terms to at least turn the volume down so when it automatically plays AT 2.30am it doesn't scare the **** out of US!!! Soooorry!! I had to laugh. It was funny.

Interesting Shelley. I have not seen the play but had heard it referred to as The Theatre of Boredom too often to want to give it a try. Given that it is
such a classic, that is probably unfair.
When Dame Edna, aka Barry Humphries said to kd that she/he had never understood what that video had to do with the song, Constant Craving and gave kd the opportunity to explain it, kd said she had no idea either and laughed. That was a pity, I thought. I knew the video was Waiting for Godot but was not clear about the connection with the song either I until I read this article. I'm quite sure kd was well aware of this. |

I have to say I am not a great fan of some of those covers. "REINTARNATION", a clever, jokey title chosen to suggest reincarnation of the songs and tarnation, to reflect their Country, cowboy sort of genre was inappropriately split so that the word appeared as: REINTAR/NATION. That distracted from the play on words intended making it meaningless. I also think they could have found a better photo than one that looked as though kd was calling for help. As for Hymns of the 49th. Parallel, an album which kd described as The Great Canadian Songbook ( eleven songs?) but whose title sounded like an album of
Church music, I don't think a rather sombre grey, wintry photograph taken, I believe in Scotland conveyed anything about the album's intended
character. Celebration of Canadian secular music? There is nothing that looks celebratory, secular or Canadian on that cover.
Watershed is the only really good cover I think as it has a nice photo and clever lettering which relates to the title.
